Water in the Universe

I began my career in 1972  after graduating from the Medway College of Design in Kent, with a first class diploma in Graphic Illustration.

Scalpel, rapidograph, and cow gum were initially my creative tools of the commercial art world, though I progressed rapidly from being a studio ‘cut and stick’ apprentice into the more diverse areas of advertising visualising and illustration.

I cut my teeth and honed my draughtsmanship skills on many blue chip assignments, emerging  as a wide-ranging and experienced visualiser and illustrator.

Working for several notable studios and advertising agencies in and around London, including J Walter Thompson, Dorlands, Leo Burnett, and Saatchi & Saatchi gave me a firm grounding in the fickle dictates of advertising deadlines and quick-turnaround expectations.

I have extensive experience in advertising and publishing illustration, creating TV storyboards, concepts, visuals, animatics and animation, and artwork for press and print.

My publishing work has included children’s books, educational material, and monthly consumer titles, all utilising my varied interpretations of style and medium to solve a wide and demanding client brief.

Employing digital paint for much of my current output, I also maintain the capability to produce conventional techniques - watercolours, gouache, oils, marker pens and graphite, when requested.

After 20 years as a studio employee I abandoned the ‘wage slave’ badge to become a freelance artist, and have maintained this status to the present day.

I currently work from my home studio in Kent, and provide much of my work via broadband and email attachments.

During my student foundation course I was introduced to the fundamentals of photography, and now use a Nikon DSLR camera extensively, both for commercial and recreational purposes, with a lean towards macro and abstract imagery.

Peering through cheap plastic microscopes as a young schoolboy probably kick-started my strong curiosity with macro optics and the ‘small world’, and I am constantly seeking out new material to refresh and expand my graphics portfolio.
